PLACES TO SEE AND THINGS TO DO IN LIEPAJA

Liepaja is often called the capital of Latvian rock music. Many famous composers and bands have been inspired by Liepaja. In the very heart of Liepaja you can find the 1st Latvian Rock Café where these stars have left their souvenirs.
But there are many other things to do and to see in Liepaja:

  • You should visit Holy Trinity Church to hear the world's largest historic unreconstructed organ with 131 stops and 7000 pipes
  • You should visit Karosta and see the
    • Officer's Palace, where the Russian Tsar Nikolay II had his parties,
    • St. Nikolay Orthodox Marine Cathedral, which Soviet Army used as a sports club and cinema,
    • Riding Manege - the local coliseum build during Tsar times,
    • Fortifications and the Northern Breakwater - you will be swept away by the brutal beauty of this place,
    • Old Prison with its ghosts - a young girl whose fiancé was shot in this prison and a dog. The best thing to see in the prison, however, is the interactive show Behind the Bars, when you have the possibility to become a prisoner and see how things used to be for them. There is also a Prison Hotel - you can spend a night in a very comfortable cell.
  • You should go to a concert by Liepaja Symphony Orchestra or to a play in the local Theatre and afterwards relax in one of the beautiful cafes and restaurants in the city centre. Don't miss the visit to the First Rock Café and listen to rock and rollers of Liepaja. Liepaja is the capital of music!
  • You should go for a romantic walk in Seaside Park enjoying the wind and the sunset reflections in the linden trees.
  • You should smell the beautiful roses while sitting in the Square of Roses - the very heart of Liepaja.
  • You should go skating and then take a ride by the tram which has been a landmark of the city for more than a century.
  • You should go to the cinema and afterwards walk to one of the bowling clubs.
  • You should come to the City Celebrations in the middle of July and see Rally Kurzeme.
  • You should dance and sing all night in one of the rock music festivals and later go to bathe your tired feet in the Baltic Sea - Liepaja beach has the whitest sand in the Baltics.
  • You should remember the special feeling you had here and return whenever your soul feels tired.
