Security challenge is currently one of the most topical issues in the world that affects anyone, not only separate regions and their inhabitants. The need for expanding contacts increases in the circumstances of the overall globalization; that is why the state policy and position concerning cooperation with other countries are so important. As a result of developing cooperation between various countries, aspects related to international security have become notably important.
To facilitate dialogue, exchange of experience and cooperation in foreign and defense affairs between the Baltic region, Europe and the Unites States, Women in International Security organized a conference "Baltic Regional Security Challenges".
The conference goals were sharing the international experience, and inviting to a dialogue on regional and global security issues.
The conference was held from 15 to 17 May 2003 in Riga, Latvia. The conference took place at the Congress Hall.
Birojs 2000 SIA project management, public relations and advisory services was the project coordinator in Latvia.
WIIS is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the influence of women in the fields of foreign and defense affairs. WIIS membership is made up of women and men from government, think tank, nongovernmental organization, academic, and military fields. The organization is active not only in the United States, but also throughout the world.
This project had received support from President Vike-Freiberga of Latvia, as she opened the conference with an introductory keynote address.
The conference brought together a small group of high-level women leaders in foreign and defense affairs from the Baltic region, the United States, and Europe. Topics addressed included increase of influence of Baltic women working in foreign and defense affairs, economic interdependency and human security issues.
WIIS cooperated in this endeavor with colleagues at a number of institutions, including the Estonian Institute for International Studies, Latvian Association of Business and Professional Women, and Vilnius University Department of International Relations and Political Science.
