1956 Graduated from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute as a civil engineer specializing in hydrotechnical equipment
1965 Appointed Minister of the Building Material Industry
1967 Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Committee
1974 Granted a degree of Doctor of Science in Economy
1988 Elected 1st Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania
1990 Elected Chairman of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party (LDLP)
1990 Elected a member of the Supreme Council - the Reconstituent Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania
March 1990- January 1991 Appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the 1st Government of the Republic of Lithuania
1992 Member of the Seimas. Elected Chairman of the Seimas
25 November 1992-25 February 1993 Acting President of the Republic of Lithuania
1993-1998 Elected President of the Republic of Lithuania by direct suffrage, receiving 60 percent of all votes. Pursuant to the Constitution, suspended his membership in the LDLP
