H.E. Mr. Andris Bērziņš was appointed to the post of the Prime Minister on May 5, 2000. He has graduated from the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the University of Latvia. Mr. A. Bērziņš had worked as a mayor at the Riga City Council for three years before he was elected as the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister started his career as a teacher and performed also administrative functions. Since regain of the independence of Latvia (in 1990), Mr.A.Bērziņš has been working in the structures of public authority: as the Minister of Welfare and the State Minister for Labour Affairs. Mr. Andris Bērziņš is a chairman of the union “Latvia’s Way”. He is married and has two children: a son and a daughter.
