Trained as a journalist with the Social Democratic press 1960-63. The Social Democratic party's candidate in 1971, elected the same year. Withdrew from the Folketing in 1984 to concentrate on the chairmanship at Denmark's Radio. Vice-president of the Social Democratic Party from 1984-1996. At the same time chairman for the party's Europe Committee and the Equal Opportunities Committee. Minister for the Interior 1993 - 1997. At the same time minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs 1994 - 1996. Then minister for the Interior and Minister for Health 1996 - 1998. Minister for Information Technology and Research from 1999.
