> Professor Danuta Hübner, Ph.D.
Professor Danuta Hübner was appointed UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in May 2000. Prior to that, from November 1998, Ms. Hübner, a national of Poland, was Deputy Executive Secretary of the Commission. Before joining the United Nations, Ms. Hübner was Minister, Head of the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, State Secretary for European Integration, Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Industry and Trade. She conducted the negotiations for Poland’s membership in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which Poland joined in November 1996. For many years she was Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Ekonomista bi-monthly and Editor-in-Chief of Gospodarka Narodowa monthly. She was a member of the Scientific Board of the Economic Sciences Institute at the Polish Academy of Sciences, Deputy Director of the Institute of Development and Strategic Studies, Deputy Director of the Research Institute for Developing Countries and a member of the Polish Statistics Council. Ms. Hübner graduated from the Department of International Economics of the Warsaw School of Economics in 1971. In 1974, she received her Ph.D., followed by a post-doctoral degree in international economics in 1980. She continued her research as a Fulbright scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (1988-1990). She was awarded the title of Professor of Economics in 1992.
