Donald Johnston, a Canadian politician and lawyer, took office as Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in 1996. He began a second five-year term in June 2001. Born in 1936, he was educated at McGill University and the University of Grenoble. He joined the international law firm of Stikeman, Elliott in 1961 and subsequently founded his own law firm, Johnston, Heenan & Blaikie. He taught law at McGill University 1963-76; was a Member of Parliament 1978-88; President of the Treasury Board 1980-82; Minister of State for Economic Development & Technology 1983-84; Minister of Justice and Attorney General June-Sept. 1984. He was elected President of Canada's Liberal Party in 1990 and re-elected in 1992. He is married to Heather Bell Maclaren, and they have four daughters.
