Tomoko Miyamoto, a national of Japan, started her career as a patent examiner at the Japan Patent Office. Until 1994, she worked in the Examination Department in the field of electronic engineering as well as in the International Affairs Division covering, in particular, international harmonization on patent laws and the Trilateral Cooperation projects among Japan, the United States and Europe. She was sent to World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from 1994 to 1996 during which she worked in the Industrial Property Law Division. Back to the Japan Patent Office, she was in charge of development cooperation activities, including the APEC IPR forum and the enforcement of intellectual property rights in Asia. Rejoined the WIPO in September 1997, she has been involved in international norm setting activities with respect to patent law, including the preparation of the Patent Law Treaty and its adoption in June 2000 as well as negotiations concerning draft Substantive Patent Law Treaty.
