To supervise the process of organising the Board of Governors' Meeting
of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Riga and to duly
discover all possible shortcomings and problems, the Supervisory Committee holds regular
monthly meetings. This time the meeting was held at the International Airport Riga.
It focused mainly on the issues of welcoming and seeing off the guests and participants of
the forthcoming Annual Meeting at the airport Riga. Dzintars Pommers, the President
of the International Airport Riga, familiarised the Supervisory Committee with the
course of the airport reconstruction and the scheme for passenger reception at the airport
terminal and VIP hall. Members of the Supervisory Committee agreed on the necessity to
raise funds to develop and improve the efficiency of passport control, as well as
implement strong security measures when servicing VIPs and other passengers. It was
decided to work in close co-operation with the Customs and Border Guard Authorities.
One of the most urgent issues to be addressed promptly is the
reconstruction of the airport access road from the city. It should be noted that already
Vilis Kristopans, the former Minister of Transportation, when holding the office, made a
promise to upgrade that road. The cost of the road construction is estimated at five
million lats. The committee decided to ask the Riga City Council to allocate budget
resources to carry out the access road repairs in co-operation with the Ministry of
Transportation and the Ministry of Finance.
Participants of the meeting discussed how to successfully co-ordinate
the traffic scheme during the EBRD Board of Governors' Meeting next May. It was concluded
that the traffic controllers would be required to ensure co-ordinated flow of traffic as
well as extra road signs should be set up.
