NOT MUCH TIME LEFT, BUT STILL SO MUCH TO DO

By Inese Bujane

Viktors Purins, President of the Latvian Builders’ Association, Supervisor of the Renovation Works at the University of Latvia (LU):

Now that we evaluate all the works in total, we have to admit that less than a half is accomplished. Unfortunately lots of technical problems emerge during the working process, which have to be resolved, however, it requires additional time. It may also happen that the design project needs to be altered. For example – we begin to work according to one project, but during the process we discover its flaws, and we have to revise it.

There is still so much work to do, and so little time. We have to accomplish works by April 2000. We need to install flooring in the Great Hall and to complete electricity as well as fire and alarm system installation. We have not finalised the carpentry works and the finishing of the balcony of the Great Hall yet.

The work is performed simultaneously in the whole building – in the Great Hall, the stairway and the lobby on the side of Merkela street. Soon we shall start the renovation of the main lobby on the side of Raina boulevard, and the stream of students will have to be channelled through the entrance from the Merkela street. The construction company Nord has already commenced the reconstruction of the stairs of that entry.

The design project is constantly improved during the working process, which requires additional time. Nevertheless, the renovation of the Latvian University should be completed in the due term.

In order to avoid unexpected delays in future, working meetings are organised once a week, attended by representatives of Birojs 2000, general contractor – the construction company Nord, the architect office Sestais Stils, its sub-contractor, and the University of Latvia.
